New Highway: The Uttar Pradesh government has approved a proposal to build the country’s second hybrid model highway. This highway will begin in Lucknow and extend to Barabanki, Bahraich, Gonda, and Nepal, benefiting Balrampur and Shravasti districts. The project will cost approximately 27,000 crore rupees, with the government providing half the funding, and private developers covering the remaining costs.
New Highway: There’s good news for those traveling from Lucknow to Bahraich and Gonda. The Uttar Pradesh government has prepared to build a six-lane highway from the capital to these two districts. To boost the economy of eastern Uttar Pradesh, the government has approved the construction of a 153-kilometer-long, six-lane road on the Barabanki-Nepal Highway hybrid model. This highway will cost approximately 27,000 crore rupees. Significantly, this will be Uttar Pradesh’s second highway and the first in eastern Uttar Pradesh to be developed on a PPP model.
The Uttar Pradesh government recently mentioned the construction of this highway in its budget, which is currently considered its largest road project. Under this project, a six-lane road will be built from Lucknow to Barabanki via Bahraich and Gonda, as well as to Nepal. This highway will facilitate travel from Lucknow to Nepal and reduce costs. Previously, only the route connecting Jewar Airport has been built on the hybrid annuity model. The government and private developers will jointly share the construction costs. The UP government will provide 40 percent of the construction cost, while the developers will cover the remaining 60 percent.
What will be the benefits of this highway?
This highway, being built from Barabanki to Nepal via Bahraich, will boost regional tourism and improve trade and industrial activities. The project will acquire six lanes of land for construction, creating a four-lane expressway, which is part of a hybrid annuity model. Under this model, the private developer is responsible for design, construction, financing, and maintenance, while the government bears a significant portion of the financial risk. In return, the developer receives fixed payments for 15 to 20 years. Several highways have already been built under this hybrid model in Gujarat, Assam, Meghalaya, Karnataka, and Bihar.
