New International Airports: October 2025 will be a significant year for India’s aviation sector. During this month, the country’s two largest cities, Delhi and Mumbai, will receive new international airports. Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is expected to be inaugurated on October 8th. Noida International Airport (AIA) is expected to be inaugurated on October 30th, after Diwali.
The opening of these two airports will help reduce passenger congestion at the existing Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai and facilitate air travel. This will join the select group of cities like New York, London, Tokyo, and Paris, where multiple airports serve the same passengers.
The opening of NMIA and NIA marks a major shift in India’s aviation sector. Despite rapidly growing air traffic, most of the country’s major cities remain dependent on a single airport. For travelers, new airports mean more travel options and seamless connectivity, not just to Delhi and Mumbai, but to a wider global network. For airlines like IndiGo, Air India, and Akasa, the upcoming airports will offer massive capacity expansion and new route opportunities.
What do experts say?
Industry experts believe that the new airports will transform Delhi-NCR and Mumbai-MMR into global aviation hubs, helping Indian airlines compete more strongly with airlines from the Middle East and Europe. While the existing airports in Mumbai and Goa are operating at nearly full capacity, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, with three terminals and four runways, still has room for growth. However, the opening of Noida International Airport could accelerate Delhi’s emergence as India’s largest aviation hub.
