Online Gaming Ban: After the Online Gaming Promotion and Regulation Bill 2025, which bans online money gaming in India, was passed by Parliament, President Draupadi Murmu also got the approval on Friday. With the implementation of this law, all online money gaming services will be banned across the country. Now those providing such games will have to face up to three years in jail and a fine of up to Rs 1 crore.

There will also be strict punishment and fine for promotion

According to the new law, not only running an online money gaming platform will be a crime, but promoting it will also be considered a serious crime. Those advertising or promoting any such platform can be punished with up to two years of imprisonment and a fine of up to Rs 50 lakh. By including this provision, the government has made it clear that it wants to completely curb this social evil.

Bill passed quickly in Parliament

Both the houses of Parliament showed great speed in passing this bill. The Rajya Sabha passed this bill in just 26 minutes and the Lok Sabha in just seven minutes. This shows that there was broad consensus among political parties on this issue and everyone together considered it necessary in the interest of society.

Ashwini Vaishnav called it a social evil

Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said in Parliament that online money gaming has become a serious evil for the society. He told that people are losing their entire life savings in the affair of these games. Vaishnav said, “From time to time society struggles with evils. In such a situation, it is the duty of the government and Parliament to investigate them and make laws to control them.”

Prime Minister Modi’s vision

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also supported this bill and said that this law will promote e-sports in the country, but will stop those online games, which are directly affecting the economic condition and mental health of the people. Modi called this law a big step towards protecting the society from harmful tendencies.

Many companies announced to stop operations

The effect of the new law was seen immediately. Many popular online gaming platforms like Dream11 and Winzo have announced that they will stop their operations. These companies said that after the strictness of the new law, they can no longer continue their services in India.

The government is considering special provisions

IT Secretary S Krishnan has indicated that the government will review the provisions of the law from time to time after implementing it. He said, “This is not a law that we keep static. We are considering whether it is possible to implement some restrictions before other sections, as there are no specific rules in this regard in the bill.”

A step to provide relief to society

This new law will provide relief to lakhs of families who were facing financial and mental stress due to online money gaming. On one hand, this step of the government points towards creating a responsible digital environment. On the other hand, it is a strong initiative towards freeing India from the dangerous tendencies of online gaming.
