e-passports: India has officially begun issuing e-passports, which are being described as an upgrade to regular passports. They promise several new features, increased security, faster verification, and easier international travel. The Ministry of External Affairs launched this service as a pilot project on April 1, 2024. The service is currently available at select Passport Seva Kendras across the country, with expansion expected to expand to more centers in the coming months.
First, understand what an e-passport is?
This new e-passport incorporates both physical and digital security technologies. Its front cover also contains a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and antenna, which stores the passport holder’s personal and biometric data.
Only a dedicated system can read the data.
This includes fingerprints, digital photographs, iris scans, and vital information such as name, date of birth, and passport number. The chip embedded in the passport is contactless and encrypted, and can only be read by a dedicated system. This technology reduces the risk of passport fraud, duplication, and identity theft.
