New Pension Scheme 2026: The Tamil Nadu government has given government employees a gift for the New Year. Chief Minister MK Stalin has announced a new pension scheme for government employees and teachers. This scheme will provide benefits similar to the Old Pension Scheme and provide employees with financial security after retirement. Let’s learn more about this new pension scheme.

What is this new pension scheme?

Fulfilling a two-decade-old demand of government employees and teachers, Chief Minister Stalin launched the Tamil Nadu Assured Pension Scheme. Launching the scheme, he said that government employees and teachers are the backbone of the state. It is our responsibility to ensure their social security.

How much pension will be received?

Under this new pension scheme, government employees will receive 50 percent of their last salary as pension. Additionally, the dearness allowance for government employees receiving pensions under this scheme will be increased every six months.

In the event of a pensioner’s death, 60 percent of the total pension will be given to their nominated family member as a family pension. If the employee dies while on duty or at the time of retirement, a death gratuity of up to ₹25 lakh will be awarded, taking into account their service period.

Burden on the Government

Chief Minister Stalin acknowledged that the new scheme will increase the financial burden on the government, but the welfare of employees is more important. According to data, the state government will have to contribute an additional ₹13,000 crore to the pension fund and incur an annual expenditure of approximately ₹11,000 crore.

Meanwhile, senior Congress leader and former Union Minister P. Chidambaram welcomed and appreciated the new ‘Tamil Nadu Assured Pension Scheme’ (TAPS) announced for Tamil Nadu government employees and teachers.
