Drivers will be fined 1,000 dirhams in addition to 10 black points for refusing to observe the left-hand signal on school buses
New Rules: Abu Dhabi Police has urged drivers to strictly adhere to the rule of stopping completely when a school bus’s side-mounted stop sign arm is activated, from both directions and at least five metres away, to ensure the safe crossing of the road by students. The police have clarified that failure to stop will result in a fine of 1,000 dirhams and 10 traffic points, and warned that school bus stop sign violations will be detected electronically.

Mandatory use of school bus stop arms
Abu Dhabi Police also requires school bus drivers to follow specific rules when using the stop arms to avoid obstructing traffic flow. These are as follows
- Stopping the bus directly in front of the student’s home, unless there is an obstruction or road construction work.
- Avoid stopping at public bus stops located on highways, major roads or arterial roads, as these locations are considered unsafe for students to board or alight from the bus.
The police further stressed that school bus drivers should not activate the stop arm while the student is inside the home, to avoid traffic jams. They also said that if it is proven that the school bus driver misused the stop arm, such as activating it at prohibited places, drivers can contest the violation of not stopping at the stop arm.
