Starting November 15, 2025, a new rule will apply to vehicles without FASTags at toll plazas. Payments made using UPI will only be charged 1.25 times the toll tax, while cash payments will be charged double. This move is aimed at promoting digital payments and simplifying toll collection.
Now, there’s some significant relief for vehicles without FASTags at toll plazas. If you don’t have a FASTag or it’s not working, there’s no need to panic. Now, if you pay your toll tax using UPI, you’ll only have to pay 1.25 times the toll charge, not double as before. However, keep in mind that cash payments will still incur double the toll charge.
This new rule has been introduced to promote digital payments and reduce cash transactions. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways stated that this change will come into effect on November 15, 2025.
Technology will make toll collection faster and easier
The ministry stated that this change has been introduced to ensure faster and digital toll collection at toll plazas. This will eliminate long queues and reduce traffic congestion. The government believes that by using technology effectively, toll collection can not only be made faster and easier, but it can also eliminate unnecessary delays and hassles.
Promoting Digital Payments
According to the new rules, those who use digital methods like UPI instead of cash payments at toll plazas will benefit. This will encourage people to adopt digital payments, which will increase transparency in transactions and eliminate the hassle of cash.
What is FASTag?
FASTag is a small sticker that is affixed to the windscreen of your vehicle. This sticker contains a unique technology called RFID (Radio Frequency Identification). When you pass through a toll plaza, sensors scan the sticker and the toll charge is automatically deducted from your account. This eliminates the need to stop your vehicle for extended periods or make cash payments.
A FASTag is linked to your bank account or prepaid wallet. Whenever you pass through a toll plaza, the toll fee is automatically deducted from your account. If your FASTag is linked to a prepaid wallet, you need to recharge or top it up periodically, just like you recharge your mobile phone.
