New work-from-home law implemented, allowing employees to work from home and office

Work-from-home: This model, developed during the COVID-19 pandemic, has now been legally recognized. This will make it easier for companies to adopt a hybrid model, which allows employees to work from both home and office.

Work-from-home: Four labor codes have been implemented in the country. Through this, 29 existing labor laws have been integrated. The new labor codes have taken several important decisions in the interest of employees. One such decision relates to work from home. Providing relief regarding work from home, this provision has now been formally included in the new labor codes implemented by the central government. Under the new system, work from home can be provided in the service sector with mutual consent between the employer and employee. It should be noted that this model, developed during the COVID-19 pandemic, has now received legal recognition. This will make it easier for companies to adopt a hybrid model. Under the hybrid model, employees have the flexibility to work from both home and office.

What’s in store for gig workers?

The labor codes define gig workers for the first time. Several important announcements have been made for workers on short-term contracts, including delivery boys and cab drivers. These include universal social security coverage, mandatory appointment letters for all employees, and provisions for statutory minimum wages and timely payment across all sectors. Aggregators will be required to contribute 1-2 percent of annual turnover, limited to five percent of the amount paid/payable to gig and platform workers. The Aadhaar-linked Universal Account Number will make welfare benefits easily accessible, fully portable, and available across all states without any migration barriers.

What did Eternal say?

Eternal Limited, the parent company of Zomato and Blinkit, welcomed the implementation of the four labor codes on Saturday. The company said this will strengthen access to social security for gig workers, including delivery partners associated with its Zomato and Blinkit businesses. Eternal told the stock exchange that these new rules will not have any negative financial impact on the health and sustainability of its business in the long term.
