How to apply for passport for infant/new born child?

Before knowing about the process related to applying for a passport for a newborn child in India, it is necessary to understand which documents are necessary.

The first thing parents should know is the age limit for a newborn passport. If your child is below 4 years of age at the time of application then he/she is eligible to get this document. Only parents or legal guardians can apply on their behalf.

Passport application for a newborn baby in India can be done both online and offline. You can choose any of these two methods. You can know about both online and offline process written below.

Apply Online Passport for Newborn

If you have thought of applying online for a passport for a newborn child, then here is the process explained-

Step 1: Visit the Passport Seva Kendra website.

Step 2: Register an account on this portal by providing correct information. Validate this account using the link sent to your email ID.

Step 3: Log in to this PSK account by providing your details.

Step 4: Choose Option 1 or Option 2 of Online Passport Application.

In the first option, an online form will be available to fill. Whereas in the second option you will be able to download this form and fill it as per your convenience.

Step 5: You will be able to directly submit the online form under option 1. If you choose option 2, you will have to save it in XML format. After this upload it in the same section where you chose option 2.

Step 6: Pay the associated fees and book the slot.

Apply Offline Passport for New Born Baby

Not all Passport Seva Kendras allow walk-in applications in case of adult passports, this service exists for passports of minors and newborn children. So here is the offline process-

Step 1: Visit your respective Passport Seva Kendra/Post Office Passport Seva Kendra/Passport Office.

Step 2: Fill the application form with relevant information.

Step 3: Submit all the required documents along with the filled form.

Step 4: Pay the fee to complete the newborn passport application.

Passport application document

The process of passport for children remains incomplete without the necessary documents. Some of the important passport documents for a newborn baby in India are –

  • The concerned municipal corporation issues the birth certificate of the child.
  • Residence Certificate, where passport of either of the parents will be considered as valid proof.
  • Passport size photograph of the child is another important passport document in India.
  • Filled Annexure H form received from Passport Seva Kendra.
  • Arrangement receipt

Fees for passport application

Generally, the regular passport application fee for a minor in India is ₹ 1000 and its instant fee is ₹ 2000.

Time taken to process passport application

The time taken for the newborn passport process may vary depending on a few factors. After successful application, the parent/guardian should receive a confirmation receipt or notification. Usually, the passport is sent to the concerned address after 4-7 days of this confirmation.
