Telecom regulator TRAI (TRAI) granted the companies till 31 March 2021 to implement the new rules related to non-essential SMM (SMS). This service of the company which does not follow the rules related to it, can be stopped by TRAI. In the same sequence, TRAI has released a list of 40 defaulting companies, which include the names of many big banks like SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Kotak Mahindra Bank. If these banks do not implement this new rule before the scheduled time, then the SMS service from these banks can be stopped.

What is TRAI’s new rules

TRAI has made it clear that the defaulting companies should complete all the regulations related to this by 31 March, otherwise their service can be disrupted to the consumers. According to TRAI, enough time has been given to implement the new guidelines related to SMS. Therefore, commercial SMS sent to consumers from April 1 without scrubbing process will be rejected.




TRAI urged the relevant departments of the Central and State Government, including the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), Insurance Regulatory Development Authority (IRDA), to institute this new rule by the entities under their jurisdiction Be sure to follow. If any institution does not accept these rules, then TRAI can reject those SMSs under the scrubbing process.

What is non-essential SMM defaulter list

In this list, TRAI has issued a list of 40 banks, which have not started sending SMMs to their customers in the new format under these rules. In such a situation, big names like SBI, ICICI, HDFC, Kotak Mahindra Bank and insurance company LIC come. This essential facility of these banks can be stopped from April 1. Due to which the OTP, important messages, notifications received by the banks can be stopped. Due to which customers may face problems during online transactions.

May face these problems

In order to provide relief to people related to SMS related to cyber fraud, TRAI has made a new rule to ban commercial messages. Under which telecom companies have to check with registered text before sending every SMS content. If the message is from a non-registered ID, it will be blocked. This will be monitored by block chain technology installed by the telecom operator, which will check the ID of the sender of the message. Its purpose is to protect the customer from cybercrime.
