Amid Pakistan’s growing fuel crisis and economic pressures, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has taken a major decision. The government has approved a 5% to 30% salary cut for employees of government companies and autonomous institutions. This decision was made at a high-level meeting chaired by the Prime Minister on Saturday. The meeting reviewed rising fuel prices and measures to reduce government expenditure. The government stated that the money saved from these cuts will be used only for relief work for the general public.

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East, particularly between the US, Israel, and Iran, has led to a sharp rise in oil prices. This has also impacted Pakistan’s economy.

Last Friday, the price of petroleum products in Pakistan was increased by up to 55 rupees per liter, forcing the government to take drastic measures to reduce expenditure.

Several decisions to reduce government expenditure

The government has also taken several new decisions to reduce fuel consumption. This includes a 50 percent reduction in fuel for government vehicles and the removal of 60 percent of government vehicles from the roads over the next two months.

Third-party audits will also be conducted to monitor government vehicles. Furthermore, the government has completely banned the purchase of new government vehicles and imposed restrictions on other government purchases.

Foreign Travel Banned

The government has also completely banned foreign travel by ministers and officials. This ban applies to government officials, ministers, state ministers, and special assistants.

Furthermore, the government has decided that the salaries of cabinet ministers, advisors, and special assistants for the next two months will be used for public welfare as savings.

A decision has also been made to implement a four-day working week to reduce fuel consumption in government offices.

The government says that in view of the current situation, these steps are necessary to manage the country’s economy and reduce fuel consumption.
