UP News: Panchayat elections to be held in March-April for the first time in two and a half decades in UP

This is the first time in the last two and a half decades in UP when the Panchayat elections are going to be held in March-April. Preparations for panchayat elections are going on fast in the state.

Lucknow: Preparations for the forthcoming Panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh are changing in full swing. At the same time, this time is the first time in the last two and a half decades in UP when the Panchayat elections are going to be held in March-April. Had there not been a strict order of the High Court, perhaps this time also elections would not have been held in March-April. According to the records of the State Election Commission, the Panchayat elections of the year 2000 were held in May-June, 2005 elections started in July and lasted till October. Similarly, in the year 2010, the election of Panchayat was held in September-October and in the previous year 2015, between September and December.

Let us tell you that the reasoning behind not holding elections in March-April has also been that the government employees are busy in March due to the last month of the financial year. Due to the harvesting of Rabi crops including wheat, farmers also do not remain vacant. If there was no problem due to Corona this time, elections would have been held between October and December. The election was getting postponed due to delimitation and reservation for the government on time.

It is worth mentioning that the tenure of the village heads ended on 25 December, so there was a compulsion to hold elections for a maximum period of six months i.e. before 25 June. In such a situation, the preparations of the government and the commission made its program. According to him, the election process had to go on till May, but now elections are to be held in March-April only by the order of the High Court.

The Commission’s Additional Election Commissioner Ved Prakash Verma says that as soon as the state government makes the notification of reservation of posts available to the commission, the commission will issue notification of the election so that the election process can be completed within the time frame fixed by the court.
