Global Passport Helpline: The Indian government is launching a major facility for millions of Indian citizens living abroad. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) plans to launch an international toll-free helpline number, allowing any Indian citizen abroad to connect directly with a Passport Seva Kendra in India without any call charges. Whether it’s a lost passport or a problem with renewal, help is now just a phone call away, and the user won’t have to spend a single rupee.

Why is this helpline needed?

Passport-related issues often cause stress for students and Indians working abroad. Losing a passport just before a flight or urgently needing a name correction for a visa can be challenging situations. In many countries, Indian embassies or consulates are located far away. This helpline will be a boon for those who cannot reach the embassy directly. Currently, international calls are very expensive, but with this service, the Indian government will cover the entire cost of the call.

How will this system work?

The government is developing a system that will route calls from anywhere in the world directly to Passport Seva Program (PSP) centers in India. Passport emergencies can arise at any time, so this helpline will operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The goal is to have a universal number for as many countries as possible, but where technical difficulties arise, separate toll-free numbers will be provided. Callers will feel as if they are calling a local number, while the answer will be provided by a professional expert located in India.

Digital Governance and TCS Partnership

This initiative is part of India’s expansion of digital governance. The Passport Seva Project was modernized in 2012 and is currently working in collaboration with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). Currently, there is a network of 37 passport offices, 92 service centers, and over 450 post office passport centers. The government retains sole authority over data security and passport issuance, while technical management is handled by partner companies.

The primary objective of this helpline is to strengthen trust between Indian diaspora and the government. The Ministry of External Affairs has invited bids from telecom companies. When this service is launched, whether a student in Europe or a worker in the Gulf countries will feel confident that their government is always there to help them.
