Passport Rule Changes: The Indian government has announced major changes to the passport rules, which will take effect after February 15, 2026. These new rules aim to simplify, expedite, and make the passport-making process more secure. The government says this will reduce paperwork, digitalize the verification process, and relieve people from long waits. Let’s explore the changes.

Document and Identity Changes

  • Under the new system, Aadhaar and other government ID cards will now be prioritized as the primary proof of identity and address. This will reduce the need to submit separate documents.
  • Most documents can now be uploaded online, eliminating the need to repeatedly visit the Passport Seva Kendra. Furthermore, the list of required documents has been shortened to make the application easier.
  • Any application that is incomplete or contains incorrect information will be strictly rejected. Therefore, it is important to exercise utmost care when filling out the form.

Police verification will be expedited.

  • Previously, police verification used to take a long time to issue a passport. Now, under the new digital system, there will be online coordination between various departments. This will allow background checks to be completed in a matter of days.
  • In some cases, passports will be issued first, and police verification will be completed later. However, officials have clarified that security standards will not be relaxed.

Online Process and Features

  • The government has also upgraded the passport portal. The entire application can now be completed and submitted online. Booking an appointment will also be easier, eliminating the need for intermediaries.
  • Applicants will be able to track their application status in real time and receive automatic status alerts.
  • Regulations for children’s passports have also been simplified. Digital birth certificates, school ID cards, and parental consent documents will now be accepted in a simplified manner.

New centers will also open.

The government plans to increase the number of passport centers in smaller towns and rural areas, so that people don’t have to travel far.

Overall, these new rules for 2026 are a major step towards making the passport process faster, safer, and more convenient. Those planning to obtain or renew their passports should keep the new rules in mind when applying before or after February 15th.
