PNG Connection: The government is accelerating the expansion of the pipeline gas network to drive energy change and is considering phasing out LPG supplies in areas where it is already available, as well as to households that do not use PNG.

Given supply disruptions caused by the war in the Persian Gulf region, the government is promoting PNG as a more reliable fuel for domestic and commercial use.

On March 24, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas issued a new rule (2026). According to this, households that have PNG access but still use LPG will have their LPG supply discontinued after three months.

However, where the installation of PNG is not possible due to technical reasons, exemptions will be granted. A No-Objection Certificate (NOC) will be required for this.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has implemented a new rule under the Essential Commodities Act to ensure the rapid delivery of PNG across the country within the stipulated time. According to the order issued late Tuesday night, home and shop owners will be required to provide space for pipelines. This is intended to reduce dependence on imported LPG cylinders.

Explaining the benefits of PNG, officials say that the biggest advantage of piped gas (PNG) is its consistent supply, eliminating the need for frequent refills of LPG cylinders. Furthermore, the adoption of PNG will strengthen the energy system and reduce gas supply-related problems.

How to Find PNG in Your City

In most cities, it’s important to first determine which gas company (distributor) operates in your area. Each region is allocated a City Gas Distribution (CGD) firm licensed by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB).

The main companies include Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) in Delhi-NCR, Mahanagar Gas Limited in Mumbai, Gujarat Gas Limited in major cities in Gujarat, Adani Total Gas Limited in areas like Vadodara and Faridabad, and GAIL Gas Limited in cities like Bengaluru and Patna.

You can easily find out if a PNG connection is available in your home through these companies’ websites or customer care.

Easy Steps for a PNG Connection:

Step 1: Check PNG Availability in Your Area

First, you need to determine if PNG services are available in your area. To do this, you need to visit the respective gas company’s website and enter your address or pincode. If the pipeline is already laid in your area, you can apply online or by visiting directly.

Step 2: Application Process

Applications can be submitted digitally or offline at an authorized center. Certain documents are required, such as identification, address, and home-related documents (such as ownership or rental agreement).

Step 3: Understand the Cost

Regarding costs, a security deposit is required, which is refundable later. For example, at Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), this can range from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000.

Step 4: Installation Time

After the application, a site inspection is conducted. The pipeline and meter are then installed, following safety checks.

Where the pipeline already exists, the connection can take 7-15 days, while in new areas, it may take longer.

Documents Required for a PNG Connection

ID Verification: Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID, Passport, or Driving License.

Address Verification: Recent electricity bill (electricity or BSNL), rental agreement, ration card, or property tax bill.

Ownership Documents: Sale Deed, Registry Papers, Society Certificate, or Tax Receipt.

Required for Tenants: NOC (Permission Letter) issued by the landlord.

Photograph: Passport-sized photo must be submitted.

Once you receive a PNG connection, gas is continuously supplied, and bills are periodically sent based on your usage. Unlike LPG, there’s no need to refill the cylinder frequently. PNG rates are also affordable in many cities.

However, PNG isn’t available everywhere. While it’s available in major cities and many areas of Gujarat, its reach remains limited in smaller cities and parts of southern India.
