Speed Post: The Postal Department has announced a major change. From September 1, 2025, Registered Post and Speed Post service will be merged. This means that now whatever domestic registered post is sent, it will be sent as Speed Post. This change will be applicable across the country. Know here what benefit the customers will get from this.

Why was this decision taken?

The Postal Department has said that the purpose of this initiative is to make the postal service easier. Also, to improve the tracking system and provide more service to the customers. Both Speed Post and Registered Post provide similar services. One focuses on fast delivery and the other is known for safe delivery.

What will change after 1 September 2025?

Registered postal label will no longer be available.

All domestic mail will now come under the Speed Post service.

Facilities like proof of delivery and requirement of receiver’s signature etc. were earlier available in registered post. They will now be provided as value added features in speed post. The existing tracking service of speed post is already better, so that the status of the parcel can be tracked in real time.

If you send any item up to 50 grams, then Rs 15 will be charged for local delivery and Rs 35 for sending 200 km, 1000 km or more than 2000 km anywhere in the country.

If the weight of the parcel is between 51 grams to 200 grams, then the charge will be Rs 25 for sending it locally, Rs 35 for up to 200 km, Rs 40 for 201 to 1000 km, Rs 60 for 1001 to 2000 km and Rs 70 for a distance more than 2000 km.

If the weight is between 201 grams to 500 grams, then you will have to pay Rs 30 for local, Rs 50 for up to 200 km, Rs 60 for 201 to 1000 km, Rs 80 for 1001 to 2000 km and Rs 90 for sending it to a distance above 2000 km.

If your parcel is more than 500 grams, then for every additional 500 grams or part thereof, you will have to pay Rs 10 for local, Rs 15 for up to 200 km, Rs 30 for 201 to 1000 km, Rs 40 for 1001 to 2000 km and Rs 50 extra for a distance above 2000 km.

Note that these charges are excluding tax. If you also want Proof of Delivery, then for this you will have to pay Rs 10 per article separately.

How many days does it take for delivery by speed post?

Local: 1–2 days

Metro to Metro: 1–3 days

State capital to capital: 1–4 days

Within the same state: 1–4 days

Rest of the country: 4–5 days

(Branch office delivery may take 1 day extra.)

Discounts for walk-in customers

Daily bookings of Rs 2,000 to Rs 1 lakh: 5% discount

Daily bookings above Rs 1 lakh: 10% discount

(Applicable to bookings from the same sender’s address)

Customers who used to use registered post earlier, should now ask the post office about the proofs or facilities they will get before sending mail by speed post. This is especially important for those who need written proof of delivery.
