Private school fees: A lengthy hearing was held in the Delhi High Court on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, on the ongoing controversy regarding fees for Delhi’s private schools. On one hand, the Delhi government is adamant on forming a “School Level Fee Regulation Committee” (SLFRC) to regulate school fees, while on the other, private schools are vehemently opposing it. So, let’s explore whether school fee collection from April 1 is illegal.

Will charging fees from April 1st become illegal?

During the hearing, senior advocate Akhil Sibal, representing private schools, told the court that the Delhi government believes all schools are merely profiteering. The schools’ biggest fear is that if a fee structure isn’t finalized by April 1st, their fees will be considered unapproved.

The schools argued that while the law states that they cannot charge more than the “fixed fee,” that doesn’t mean they won’t charge any fees at all. The government’s stance suggests that if their conditions aren’t met, the schools will resort to “zero fees,” which is not practical.

The schools also argued in court that the Delhi government is treating all schools with the same prism. They have sought a stay on the notification regarding the formation of the SLFRC.

If the committee is not formed, there will be losses.

Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, representing the Delhi government, argued that if the formation of these committees (SLFRC) is halted, the consequences could be serious. The government maintains that these committees are not meant to harm schools, but rather to establish a transparent process for setting fees before the new semester.
