The 10th class examination for the year 2025 will be held from February 10th to March 18th, and the 12th class public examination will be held from February 15th to April 4th.
Public Exam: CBSE Education Board has announced new restrictions for students appearing for the Class 10 and 12 public examinations. With the National Education Policy recommending that crores of students who have dropped out of school education be brought back into the fold, the CBSE Board’s current announcement has raised various debates.
The Gross Enrollment Rate (GER) for classes 6-8 in India is 90.9%. However, it is only 79.3% and 56.5% for classes 9-10 and 11-12 respectively. This means that students who go up to class 8 drop out of school during the later grades due to compulsory education.
According to the 75th National School Survey (NSSO) in 2017-18, the number of out-of-school children in the 6-17 age group was 32.2 crore. The National Education Policy has suggested various proposals to bring back the dropout students.
CBSE Announcement: In this situation, keeping in mind the holistic learning experience and the welfare of the students, it has announced some fundamental changes in the educational structure. Accordingly, the board has announced that class 10 will be converted into a 2-year program. In addition, classes 9 and 10 will be integrated. Both of these will be taken as the basis for class 10 learning. Only if both of these are passed, class 10 will be accepted as a pass. Similarly, classes 11 and 12 will be integrated and taken as the basis for class 12 learning.
Therefore, in the coming times, the 10th and 12th class board exams will not be a single year exam but a two-year educational program. The board exam score will be determined based on the marks obtained in the class exam and the projects exam in 2 consecutive years. Therefore, students who do not attend school are pushed to the point of not being eligible for the board exam.
Attendance: The CBSE Board is taking various steps to ensure that students enrolled in schools writing the 10th and 12th public examinations attend school regularly. As part of this, it has made 75% attendance mandatory for appearing in the 10th and 12th board exams.
It has been stated that 25% leave will be allowed only for medical emergencies, participation in national level sports and artistic events. It has also been categorically stated that students who do not attend without any reason will not be eligible for the examination.
It is already in practice that 75% attendance is mandatory for board exams. However, this has placed an additional burden on students as the learning ability of the student is determined based on continuous monitoring for 2 years.
