Public Holiday Declared: The confusion over whether Makar Sankranti will be celebrated on January 14th or 15th in Uttar Pradesh has ended. The government has declared January 15th a public holiday. All government offices and banks will be closed on this day. This holiday was originally scheduled for January 14th, but has now been changed.

Earlier, in an order issued on November 17, a restricted holiday was declared on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, on the occasion of Makar Sankranti at serial number 2 in the list of holidays declared for the year 2026. According to a release issued by SVS Ranga Rao, Principal Secretary, General Administration Section, Uttar Pradesh, on Monday, after due consideration at the government level, it has been decided to declare a public holiday on January 15, 2026, under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, in place of the restricted holiday declared on January 14 on the occasion of Makar Sankranti.

Under this decision, January 15, 2026 (Thursday) is declared a public holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. Accordingly, the notification of the General Administration Department, Government of Uttar Pradesh, dated November 17, 2025, is considered amended to this extent.

The Sun will leave Sagittarius and enter Capricorn

On Makar Sankranti, the Sun leaves Sagittarius and enters Capricorn, which is considered the beginning of Uttarayan. The Sun’s entry into Capricorn is called Sankranti. Donating jaggery laddus, khichdi, and urad dal brings special virtue. According to the Vishnu Purana, donating rice is considered sinless. Astrologer Praveen Shastri stated that this time the auspicious time for Sankranti will be on January 15.

According to Sindhu Nirnay, the Sun will enter Capricorn during the night. Therefore, Sankranti will be celebrated the next day, January 15th. To ensure longevity and good health, patients should donate oil and food on Sankranti. Chanting, penance, charity, bathing, and offering prayers hold special significance on this day. Lord Vishnu is particularly fond of yellow objects. During worship, offer yellow flowers, fruits, and yellow clothing to the Lord.
