Indian Railways has announced a new policy for passengers, allowing them to change the date of their confirmed train tickets without paying any cancellation fees. This new system will be effective from January 2026. Currently, if a passenger wishes to change their travel date, they must first cancel the ticket and then book a new ticket for the new date, which also incurs a cancellation fee. For example, if a ticket is cancelled between 48 hours and 12 hours before the scheduled departure of a train, a fee of 25% of the total fare is deducted.

Under the new policy, passengers will be able to change their ticket dates online without any additional charges. However, this change will depend on seat availability. If the ticket price on the new date is higher, the passenger will have to pay the difference.

There’s a catch!

Vaishnav stated, “This system is unfair and not in the best interest of passengers.” He confirmed that instructions have been issued to implement the new, passenger-friendly changes.

However, the Railway Minister stated that there is no guarantee of getting a confirmed ticket on the new date, as it depends on seat availability. Furthermore, if the new ticket price is higher, passengers will have to pay the difference in fare.
