Saudi Weather Update: Saudi Arabia’s National Center of Meteorology (NCM) has released its preliminary report for Ramadan 1447H (2026). Weather forecasts for the holy cities of Mecca and Medina are expected to be harsh this year. According to the report, rainfall is expected to be significantly lower than normal this year, and temperatures may also rise. Those planning to travel for Umrah or pilgrimage should prepare for the heat.
What is the weather like in Mecca and Medina?
The Meteorological Department predicts that this time, rainfall in both holy cities will be below average. Mecca typically receives 4.2 mm of rain per month, and Medina 4.3 mm, but this time, even less is expected. Even if some rain falls, it will be very light.
Temperatures are expected to increase. Temperatures in Mecca could be up to 1 degree Celsius higher than normal, while in Medina, the increase could reach 1.2 degrees Celsius. Pilgrims visiting the area will need to follow the administration’s advice to avoid the sun and heat.
New Rules and Important Dates for Ramadan
The Saudi Supreme Court has requested a moon sighting on the evening of February 17, 2026. Depending on the moon sighting, Ramadan may begin on February 18 or 19. Furthermore, some important rules have been established for mosques and schools:
School Timings: During Ramadan, schools nationwide will begin between 9 and 10 a.m. to provide relief to fasting students.
Umrah Permit: Obtaining a permit through the Nusuk app is mandatory for traveling to Mecca. No one without a permit will be allowed past the checkpoint.
I’tikaf and Donations: Pre-registration is required for I’tikaf at the mosque. Cash donations are strictly prohibited; donations can only be made through government platforms like “Ehsan.”
Special Facilities for Pilgrims
Special arrangements have been made at the Haram Sharif in view of the increasing heat. Air conditioning systems and ‘cool marble’ floors have been fully installed in both holy mosques. 3D maps and electronic reporting systems will be used to manage crowds. Violators of visa regulations can face fines of up to 50,000 riyals, so it is crucial to adhere to these rules.
