SCHOOL HOLIDAYS: A cold wave continues to wreak havoc in many states across the country. Due to falling temperatures and fog, visibility on the roads has decreased. Keeping students’ health in mind, school holidays have been declared in many states.
School Holiday: Severe cold, dense fog, and a cold wave have gripped many states across the country, including North India, disrupting normal life. Given the reduced visibility and plummeting temperatures, and for the health of students, several state governments have decided to close schools. Some schools have extended their holidays, while others have declared winter vacations. These holidays will apply equally to all private and government schools. Let’s find out where schools will remain closed.
Holidays extended in these districts of Uttar Pradesh.
In Mathura, Kasganj, and Firozabad districts, schools up to grade 8 have been declared closed until January 14, 2026. This order applies to all Shiksha Parishad, government, non-government-aided, recognized, and board schools.
Secondary schools in Lucknow and Prayagraj districts will remain open, but educational activities in primary schools will be suspended until January 14. Teachers will remain present in school and complete departmental work and board exam-related tasks.
Holidays in Bihar as well
Patna District Magistrate Dr. Tyagarajan S.M., exercising his special powers under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Services Code (BNSS), 2023, has declared a school holiday. Under the order, all government, private, aided, and board schools in the district will remain closed until January 8th. This order also applies to pre-schools and Anganwadi centers. However, school timings for classes 9th to 12th have been changed, operating from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm.
Sheohar District Magistrate Pratibha Rani has directed that all private and government schools (including pre-schools and Anganwadi centers) up to class 8th be suspended until January 6th, 2026.
Schools in Punjab will reopen from January 8th.
In view of the increasing cold, the Punjab government has extended the holidays for all government, aided, recognized, and private schools until January 7th, 2026. All schools will now reopen as normal from January 8th. Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains, in a post on Instagram, wrote that this decision was taken on the orders of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, prioritizing the health and safety of children and staff.
Schools closed in Haryana and Delhi until January 15
As per a circular issued by the Directorate of School Education, Haryana, all private and government schools will have winter vacations from January 1 to 15 for students from nursery to grade 12. During the winter vacation, students in grades 10 and 12 may be called to school for practicals as per the pre-determined schedule. All education officers have been instructed to strictly enforce the order in the schools under their jurisdiction.
According to the official academic calendar released by the Delhi Directorate of Education, all private, aided, and unaided schools will remain closed until January 15, 2026, for winter vacation. However, the schedule may change due to air pollution or cold. Students and parents are advised to monitor the official website of the Delhi Directorate of Education for more information and to contact the respective schools.
Schools Closed in Jammu and Kashmir Until February 2026
Due to snowfall in the mountains, schools in Jammu and Kashmir have been closed until February 2026. According to the administration’s schedule, pre-primary to grade 8 will be closed until February 28, 2026, and will reopen on March 1. School holidays for grades 9 to 12 began on December 11, 2025, and will continue until February 22, 2026.
Cold and Fog to Continue
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), there is no hope of relief from fog and cold for the next three to four days. Dense to very dense fog is expected in many parts of North India for the next seven days. A cold wave is expected in Delhi and surrounding areas from January 4 to 7. Cold wave conditions may also persist in Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan for two to three days. There is a warning of dense fog in Punjab, Haryana, UP and Bihar till January 8.
