Silver Hallmark Rule: The government is now preparing to guarantee the purity of silver jewellery like gold. For this, a new hallmarking rule will come into effect on silver jewellery from tomorrow, 1 September 2025. However, this rule will not be mandatory yet but will be voluntary. That is, customers can buy hallmarked silver or non-hallmarked silver as per their choice.
What is the new change?
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has set 6 new standards for the purity of silver 800, 835, 900, 925, 970 and 990. Now every hallmarked jewellery will also have a 6-digit unique code (HUID). This code will immediately tell what purity the jewellery is and whether it is genuine or not. This system will replace the old hallmarking method and bring more transparency.
Why is hallmarking necessary?
Hallmarking means proof of the purity of the metal. After testing the jewelry in the BIS lab, a mark is put on them. This assures the customer that the jewelry for which he is paying is as pure as he wants. There is a possibility of adulteration in jewelry without hallmark. But now the possibility of fraud will be reduced with the HUID number and hallmark.
What will the customers get?
Now customers will be able to easily go to the BIS Care App and check with the Verify HUID feature whether the code marked on the jewelry is real or fake. Hallmarking will ensure that the silver is of the same purity for which the customer is paying. Jewelry purchases will become safer and more reliable than before.
Like gold, now silver too
In the year 2021, the government had made hallmarking mandatory on gold jewelry. On the same lines, now this system is being introduced for silver jewelry as well. The aim of the government is to make the jewelry market more transparent and provide genuine products to the customers.
What will change after September 1?
From September 1, 2025, customers will have the option to buy hallmarked silver or non-hallmarked silver. However, experts believe that as awareness among people increases, they will show more trust in hallmarked silver. This will not only benefit customers but will also increase trust in the jewelry industry and reduce the scope of adulteration.
