Prepaid smart meters are being installed in millions of homes in Purvanchal, which are now digital. Consumers will be able to monitor their electricity consumption every 15 minutes through the “Urjavan” mobile app, ensuring accurate billing and eliminating complaints of incorrect billing. Alerts will be provided when the balance is low, and power will be automatically disconnected if timely recharge is not made. This scheme is being implemented under the central government’s RDSS, with a target completion date of 2026.
Smart Meters New update: Smart meters have now fully entered the digital age. Under the ambitious plan of Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (PUVVNL), prepaid smart meters are being installed in millions of homes across Purvanchal, including Kashi.
Now, consumers will be able to view their electricity consumption readings every 15 minutes through their mobile app, Urjaat. This will ensure completely accurate electricity bills and eliminate complaints of incorrect billing. Consumers will also be relieved of unwanted disconnections, as they will receive an alert when their balance is low.
This scheme is being implemented under the central government’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). GMR Kashi Smart Meters Limited has been tasked with installing over 800,000 meters in the Varanasi cluster. This process, which began in 2024, has already installed millions of meters, and the full target is expected to be achieved by 2026.
In the new year 2026, the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation has issued a warning that electricity will be automatically cut off if the prepaid meter balance reaches negative, making timely recharge essential. It’s easy to understand how smart meters differ from older meters. Older meters used manual readings, with employees visiting homes to read them, which made errors possible. Tampering was easy, and an estimated bill was generated at the end of the month even when there was no consumption.
Smart meters will be connected to the internet.
Due to the lack of an internet connection, the process was entirely manual. Smart meters are connected to the internet and provide updates every 15-30 minutes. Real-time consumption can be viewed through a mobile app or SMS. Hacking or tampering is virtually impossible. Reading and bill generation are automatic.
The biggest advantage of the prepaid system
The biggest advantage of the prepaid system is that the more you recharge, the more electricity you receive. Recharges can be easily done through the UPPCL app. Consumers are relieved that accurate billing will save electricity. By monitoring their own consumption, unnecessary use can be prevented. Solar users are instructed to install check meters to ensure accurate net metering. Although some complaints have been received, such as fast meter running or billing problems, the department is addressing them through mega camps and the helpline 1912.

The second phase of the Electricity Bill Relief Scheme has begun, which will continue till January 31. Along with 100% interest waiver, 20% principal amount waiver is also stipulated. The Regulatory Commission has issued a new cost data book, in which excess recovery will be adjusted. This is a big step to stop electricity theft and bring transparency in Purvanchal. Priority is being given to the areas with theft. Consumers should be aware, download the app and recharge on time. This will not only ensure correct bills but will also strengthen the electricity system. The people of Kashi are now in the digital electricity era.
