The Indian Postal Department has revised the Speed Post rates after 12 years. The new rates will be effective from 1 October 2025. Along with this, many new services and safety features are being added for customers.
Why were the rates changed?
Speed Post rates were last revised in October 2012. During this period, not only did operating costs increase, but investment in technology and digital services also had to be increased. The Ministry says that the new rates are in keeping with the times and this was necessary to continue the latest services.
Online Payment – The hassle of paying cash at the counter will be eliminated. Customers will be able to pay directly online.
OTP-based Delivery – The parcel will be delivered to the person who provides the correct OTP. This will increase both safety and trust.
SMS Alerts – Customers will receive SMS notifications at every step regarding the arrival of their parcel.
Online Booking – It will now be easy to book a parcel from home using a mobile app or website.
Real-time Tracking – Customers will be able to instantly track their item’s location and when it will arrive.
Registration Service – Online registration is available for regular customers, making service faster and safer.
What will the new charges be?
Speed Post rates will now be determined based on weight and distance.
Local areas: Items up to 50 grams will be sent for ₹19, 51 to 250 grams for ₹24, and 251 to 500 grams for ₹28.
Up to 200 kilometers: Items up to 50 grams will be sent for ₹47, 51 to 250 grams for ₹59, and 251 to 500 grams for ₹70.
Up to 201 to 500 kilometers: ₹47 up to 50 grams, ₹63 up to 51 to 250 grams, and ₹75 up to 251 to 500 grams.
Up to 501 to 1000 kilometers: ₹47 up to 50 grams, ₹68 up to 51 to 250 grams, and ₹82 up to 251 to 500 grams.
From 1001 to 2000 kilometers: ₹47 for up to 50 grams, ₹72 for 51 to 250 grams, and ₹86 for 251 to 500 grams.
More than 2000 kilometers: ₹47 for up to 50 grams, ₹77 for 51 to 250 grams, and ₹93 for 251 to 500 grams.
For example, if someone wants to send a document weighing up to 200 grams from Delhi to Mumbai (approximately 1400 km), they will now have to pay ₹72.
Extra Service Charges
If a customer chooses to avail OTP-based delivery or registration service, they will have to pay ₹5 extra per item plus GST.
Relief for Students and Bulk Customers
The Postal Department has also announced a 10 percent discount for students and a 5 percent discount for new bulk customers.
Merger of Registered Post
Effective September 1, 2025, Registered Post will be fully merged with Speed Post. This means that there will no longer be a separate Registered Post service.
