US Student Visa New Rule Proposal: President Donald Trump can implement new rules for students dreaming of studying in America. Under the new rules, foreign students will no longer be able to study in America for years. The Trump administration has proposed to set a maximum limit for foreign students studying in America i.e. F-1 visa holders. If the course of foreign students is more than four years, then they will have to get a student visa again.
This is just a proposal right now. That is, it has not been implemented immediately, but first it was placed before the public and suggestions will be taken on it. It is written in the notice that the public will be given 30 days so that they can send their suggestions / objections.
What were the rules in America regarding student visa till now?
Before the new rule, all foreign students who went to America to study were on Duration of Status. That is, until their course is completed, they can stay in America and study on a student visa. This rule was implemented in 1978.
This meant that as long as students are studying full-time in a college/university, they can stay in America. Under the 1978 rule, the presence of students in America depends on the duration of their course. After this, many students used to do internships as well, but now this is not the case in the new rules.
What do the new rules say?
Now new rules can be implemented in America regarding student visa. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced that they will publish a new rule (Proposed Rule). Under the new rules, foreign students and exchange visitors can come to America for studies, but only for four years.
This means that the student visa will be considered valid only for four years. If the student’s course is more than four years, then they will have to get a new student visa. If they do not do so, they will have to leave America. This rule can have the biggest impact on PhD, research or medical students, because their studies are more than four years. Due to these rules, the number of international students wishing to study in America may be affected.
