Income Tax Refund: The deadline for filing income tax returns has passed, September 16th. Taxpayers are now eagerly awaiting their refunds. However, this time, the department is strictly investigating whether anyone has used fraudulent documents to gain undue advantage.
Income Tax Refund: This year, the biggest complaint from income tax return filers is the delay in refunds. Now, the reason for this delay has been revealed. This time, the government is taking cautious steps in issuing refunds. Income tax refunds have declined by 16 percent this year. Officials involved in this matter say that refunds are being thoroughly investigated to prevent fraud. However, sometimes refunds get stuck due to incorrect information. Due to this decrease in refunds, direct tax collection this year increased by 6.3 percent to ₹11.9 lakh crore.
Every year, the tax department advises people that if they haven’t received their refund within 4-5 weeks, they should first check their ITR filing and bank details. It should be noted that a TR refund is the amount of excess tax paid during the year.
This includes TDS, advance tax, or self-assessment tax. When the Income Tax Department investigates and finds that the amount of tax you paid is excessive, the same amount is returned to your account as a refund. If the refund is delayed or hasn’t arrived yet, there may be a few common reasons.
Why are refunds delayed?
The biggest reason for refund delays is fake claims. Many people try to obtain refunds by submitting false documents. The Income Tax Department uses advanced technology and data matching to detect such cases. People commit various types of fraud, including submitting fake medical bills, making false HRA claims, showing excessive donation entries, and evading tax by underreporting income.
