TCS CHRO confirms news of 6,000 employee layoffs, says this on layoffs

TCS Share Price: TCS announced its results for the July to September quarter on Thursday. Following this, the company’s stock rose more than 1 percent. The company’s Chief Operating Officer confirmed the layoffs of 6,000 employees.

TCS Layoffs Process: Tata Group IT company TCS announced that it has laid off 6,000 employees (approximately 1%) as part of its restructuring process. This information was provided by the company’s Chief Operating Officer (CHRO), Sudeep Kunnumal. He dismissed rumors of 50,000 to 80,000 layoffs. Kunnumal also advised against paying attention to such false reports. He also stated that the company is not targeting any specific number of employees to be laid off.

Mid- and Senior-Level Employee Layoffs

According to the IT employee union Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate, TCS’s employee strength in the second quarter (FY 2026) was 593,314. This is 19,755 fewer than the 613,069 in the first quarter. Kunnummal explained that the layoffs were primarily among mid- and senior-level employees who could not adjust to new roles. He added that the company has laid off approximately 1% of its workforce (6,000 employees), which was in the mid- and senior-level.

18,500 New Employees Hired

Kunnummal also stated that TCS recently hired 18,500 new employees. All offer letters issued by the company have been fulfilled, and this process will continue. He stated that they will fulfill all campus recruitment offers. TCS had set a target of hiring over 40,000 employees for FY 2026. However, given the global market situation, CHRO Kunnummal declined to provide any specific numbers.

Aim to Build an AI-Based IT Services Company

TCS aims to become the world’s largest AI-based IT services company. The company had planned to lay off 2% of its workforce, or 12,261 employees, this year. Most of these employees are mid- and senior-level employees. Kunnummal also claimed that the layoff process was handled with sensitivity and respect. The company had formed special teams to conduct sensitive conversations with affected employees.

However, unions have accused TCS of pressuring them and withholding salaries and other benefits, which the company has denied. Kunnummal stated that the company will provide higher bonuses in the current quarter than in previous quarters. He added that at the junior level, they offer 100% bonuses, and this will continue.
