Temple money belongs to God, cannot be used for banks: CJI Surya Kant said a big thing

0

The CJI said that the temple money belongs to God and hence, the money should be saved, protected and used only for the interests of the temple and it cannot become a source of income or livelihood for any cooperative bank.

Chief Justice Surya Kant on Friday made a significant remark, saying that temple funds belong to God and cannot be used to prop up cash-strapped cooperative banks. A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant (CJI) and Justice Joymalya Bagchi made the sharp remark while hearing appeals filed by some cooperative banks challenging a Kerala High Court order directing them to return funds deposited with the Thirunelli Temple Devaswom.

CJI Surya Kant asked, “You want to use the temple’s money to save the bank? What’s wrong with directing that the temple’s money, instead of being kept in a cooperative bank that is struggling, go to a healthy nationalized bank that can pay maximum interest.” The CJI stated that the temple’s money belongs to the deity and, therefore, should be saved, protected, and used solely for the temple’s interests and cannot become a source of income or livelihood for a cooperative bank.

The petitions against the High Court’s order were filed by Mananthavady Co-operative Urban Society Limited and Thirunelli Service Cooperative Bank Limited. The High Court had directed five cooperative banks to close the Devaswom’s fixed deposits and return the entire amount within two months, as the banks had repeatedly refused to release the matured deposits. The bench disagreed with the banks’ contention that the High Court’s sudden directive was causing difficulties.

The bench said banks must build their credibility with the public. “If you can’t bring in customers and deposits, that’s your problem,” it said. The top court declined to entertain the petitions. However, it allowed the banks to approach the high court for an extension of time to comply with the controversial order.
