Indian Railway Ticket Refund Rules: If you’ve booked a train ticket and it’s delayed by three hours, the AC fails while you’re traveling in an AC coach, or the train is cancelled, you can get a refund from IRCTC. Let’s find out how.
Indian Railway Ticket Refund Rules: Indian Railways is continuously improving its services to provide passengers with a comfortable and safe travel experience. For passenger convenience, the Railways has established numerous rules that many passengers are unaware of. Or, even those who are aware of them, often fail to remember them when the time comes. If you frequently travel by train, you should be aware of some of the rules related to refunds.
You should also know how to obtain a refund if you are booking a ticket online or at the counter, such as train delays, non-functioning AC coaches, or train cancellations.
What to do if a train is delayed by 3 hours or more?
First, let’s understand this rule: If you book a train ticket and arrive at the railway station to travel on that train, you discover that the train is delayed by 3 hours or more. In such a situation, many passengers either wait for the train and there are some who return home after the train is late or complete the journey through other means of transport.
You should know that if your train is delayed by 3 hours or more and you are not travelling on that train, you are entitled to a full refund.
For this refund, it is necessary that the train is delayed by 3 hours or more at the station from where you were supposed to board the train and you did not travel on the train.
In such a case, whether you have a confirmed ticket, RAC ticket, or your ticket is on the waiting list, you will still be entitled to a refund.
No cancellation charges will be deducted from your ticket and you will get your full refund; you just need to file a TDR for this.
Follow this process to receive a refund.
- First, you must log in through the IRCTC app or online website.
- Now go to the “My Bookings” section.
- Select the ticket option and click on “File TDR.”
- You must then select the reason. The option will be: The train is delayed by 3 hours or more and the passenger did not travel.
- Most importantly, you must file the TDR before the train departs. File it before the actual departure time of the train from the station you were traveling from.
- After this process, the full ticket amount will be refunded to your bank account.
What will happen if you book tickets over the counter?
Even today, there are those who book tickets over the counter. If a train is delayed by three hours or more and the passenger is unable to board the train, they can surrender their ticket at the boarding station before the actual departure. To do this, you will need to go to the ticket counter, where you will receive a full refund, without any cancellation charges.
IRCTC also provides refunds in these cases.
- If you booked a ticket in an AC coach and the AC was not working, you will be refunded for the portion where the AC was not working.
- To do this, you will need to complain to the train’s TTE and obtain a certificate. Without this, you will not receive a refund.
How much refund will you receive?
- In case of AC not operating, the difference in ticket amount is refunded, not the full amount.
- If you booked an AC 1 ticket and the AC is not operating, the difference between the AC 1 and first class tickets will be refunded.
- For AC 2 tickets, the refund will be equal to the difference between the sleeper class and second class tickets.
- For AC chair tickets, the difference between the second class and second class tickets will be refunded.
What are the rules for train cancellations?
If you booked a ticket online and the train is cancelled, you don’t need to apply for a refund anywhere. The money will automatically be credited to your account. However, if you booked a ticket over the counter and the train is cancelled, you will need to surrender your ticket at the computerized reservation counter, after which you will receive a full refund.
