Toll Tax Rule Change: The central government has amended the toll regulations, directly benefiting travelers. The new rule will come into effect on February 15, 2026. This arrangement will remain in place for one year, or until the expressway is fully operational.
Toll Tax Rule Change: The rapidly developing expressways in India are making travel easier. The government is paying special attention to road infrastructure. This has made commuting much easier than before. However, during the lengthy expressway construction process, people had to pay tolls for every few kilometers. This caused frustration. Now, this rule has changed. In fact, tolls were previously collected even when expressways were not fully completed. However, starting February 15th, the government will no longer be able to collect tolls on such incomplete expressways.
You may have often experienced being charged a toll when traveling through a section of a national expressway that hasn’t yet fully opened. But now, you won’t have to pay a higher toll. The central government has changed the toll rules, which will directly benefit travelers.
No toll charges until end-to-end operation is complete
Now, when a national expressway is not fully operational, the toll on its open portion will be charged at the normal national highway rate. Previously, expressway tolls were charged 25% higher, regardless of whether the road was fully completed. The government made this change by amending the National Highway Fee (Determination and Collection) Rules, 2008.
The new rule will come into effect on February 15th
The new rule will come into effect on February 15th, 2026. This will remain in place for one year or until the expressway is fully operational, whichever is earlier.
The government says this will encourage people to use incomplete but open expressway sections more. This will reduce congestion on older highways, speed up travel, and reduce pollution by reducing traffic congestion.
