Traffic Challan: Automatic challan will be issued for crossing toll gate without insurance; 3 months jail if you cross again

Now driving without insurance in Odisha can be costly. Yes, because if your car is not insured, then you can be automatically fined as soon as the car crosses the toll gate. Let’s understand this in detail.

The number of vehicles without insurance on the roads is increasing day by day, which not only poses a threat to vehicle owners but also the victims of road accidents do not get proper compensation. Now, to eliminate this problem, the Odisha State Transport Authority (STA) has implemented a new system. From February 1, 2025, e-detection systems will be installed at 22 toll gates in Odisha, which will identify uninsured vehicles and automatically issue e-challans.

How will this e-detection system work?

The e-detection systems installed at toll gates will immediately check the validity of the vehicles’ insurance. If a vehicle is found without valid insurance, a challan of Rs 2,000 will be issued for the first time.

If the same vehicle is caught again, a challan of Rs 4,000 will be imposed. Apart from this, the guilty vehicle owner can also be jailed for up to three months. In some cases, the guilty can be punished with both jail and fine.

Why is this new system necessary?

Many people do not get their vehicles insured on time, due to which road accident victims do not get compensation. Through this new system, the Odisha government wants to ensure that all vehicles running on the road have valid insurance, so that the loss can be compensated in case of an accident.

This technology has been implemented earlier also

This is not the first time that the e-detection system has been implemented. A few months ago, the Bihar government also installed a similar system at 32 toll plazas in the state. This system also checked the PUC (Pollution Under Control) certificate. If found without PUC, a fine of Rs 10,000 was imposed on the vehicle owner.

This system implemented in Bihar had issued more than 5,000 e-challans in just two days. The government had also said that in future this system will also be implemented in Patna, Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur and other smart cities.

Now if you are driving without insurance, be alert. The e-detection system implemented in states like Odisha and Bihar may soon come to other states as well. This will not only improve road safety but will also help in getting justice in road accident cases.
