According to data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, road accidents have increased from 1.38 lakh to over 1.68 lakh in the last three years.

Traffic Rules: If you live in Delhi-NCR and often go to Delhi by your car, then this news is for you. Delhi Traffic Police has issued a new order for drivers. Under this, if you are caught more than three times for rash driving (driving carelessly or unsafely) or driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, then your license will be canceled. This step of Delhi Traffic Police is to stop the increasing number of fatal accidents on the roads of the capital and to take strict action against “habitual violators”.

Road accidents increased rapidly

According to the data of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, road accidents have increased from 1.38 lakh to more than 1.68 lakh in the last three years. In view of this, the traffic police has written a letter to the Transport Department and requested to take action including cancellation of license of drivers who habitually violate traffic rules. Let us tell you that in 2021 in Delhi, 1,239 people were killed in 1,206 accidents. In 2024, till December 15, this number rose to 1,431 people in 1,398 accidents. This means that on an average three people died in vehicle accidents every day in 2021 and in 2024 this number increased to four per day.

Amendments in Motor Vehicles Act

The Motor Vehicles Act, enacted in 1988, was amended in 2019, increasing the penalty amount for most offences from around Rs 100 to the current range of Rs 500- Rs 20,000. A recent letter written by the Delhi Traffic Police to the Delhi Transport Department recommended cancellation of driving licences of those violating Section 184 and/or 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, three or more times. These sections relate to dangerous driving – which includes offences such as jumping red lights, wrongly overtaking and using the phone while driving – besides driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
