Last month, Jio-Airtel had removed the Rs 249 prepaid recharge with 1GB data per day. Now TRAI has sought a response from both the companies.
Last month, lakhs of people who recharged prepaid mobile phones were shocked when the country’s two major telecom companies Jio and Airtel removed their cheap 1 GB daily data plan. There was a lot of noise over the removal of the Rs 249 recharge plan. There was a lot of criticism on the Internet as well. This was a mobile recharge plan that the common man used because he got internet and unlimited calls for almost a month. Now the government has taken action. According to media reports, the Department of Telecommunications has sought a report from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in this matter. TRAI has asked Jio and Airtel to respond on the removal of that recharge plan.
First Jio, then Airtel removed the plan
According to reports, TRAI wants to know why the telecom companies did this and what effect it will have on the people. This matter came to light last month. Jio and Airtel have discontinued their popular Rs 249 mobile prepaid plan. This plan offered 1 GB data per day along with calling and SMS benefits. The validity of Jio’s plan was 28 days and Airtel’s was 24 days. First Jio removed the recharge plan from the website, after which Airtel also removed the plan.
Telecom companies’ side
It was said that telecom companies have removed the cheaper option by not making the recharge plan expensive and have forced people to take expensive recharge plans. According to reports, Jio has told TRAI that its plan can still be taken by physically visiting Jio stores. At the same time, Airtel has said that the company has taken this decision in view of the way customers use it.
Users who recharge 1GB data plan
It was told in a media report that out of about 50 crore wireless subscribers of Jio, 20-25 percent of the customers used plans with 1GB data. About 18-20% of Airtel’s customers used plans with 1GB daily data. At the same time, about 20-25% of Vi’s customers use plans with 1GB data. The 1GB daily data plan has not been discontinued by Vi at the moment. Reports said that telecom companies are discontinuing cheap prepaid recharges to meet the rising cost of 5G networks, but now the matter has again come into the limelight after the government asked for a report.
TRAI asked many questions
According to reports, TRAI has also asked telecom companies which plans their customers are taking now and why they removed the plan. It is said that TRAI is keeping an eye on this matter. According to reports, removing cheap recharges can cause problems to people living in rural areas.
