Train cancelled: Anticipating dense fog during the severe winter in North India, the Railways has cancelled 56 trains on several routes from December 1, 2025, to March 1, 2026. The move is aimed at preventing potential accidents and delays due to low visibility, but it is expected to disrupt the travel plans of thousands of people, especially those traveling through Punjab.
Ambala Railway Division officials confirmed that advance booking for all affected trains was suspended weeks ago. The suspension information has been issued to all station masters and published in the reservation system.
Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Naveen Kumar said the decision is part of the annual winter preparedness plan. “In severe fog, running long-distance trains becomes risky and causes frequent delays. Cancelling selected trains ensures safety and operational efficiency,” he said.
Passengers traveling to Chandigarh will face inconvenience.
At least three of the 56 suspended trains originate from Chandigarh, while several other trains passing through Jalandhar, Ludhiana, and other major stations in Punjab have also been halted for the winter. Passengers who rely on intercity trains daily and travel to Jammu, Vaishno Devi, Amritsar, and other pilgrimage sites will face significant inconvenience.
The Railways has urged passengers to stay updated through official helplines, online status checks, and mobile alerts. The fog management plan also includes the deployment of anti-fog devices and speed-controlled operations on active rail routes.
