Aadhar Number: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has deactivated more than 1.17 crore Aadhar numbers. Actually, UIDAI has taken this step due to misuse of Aadhar. UIDAI has started deactivating the Aadhar of deceased persons to prevent misuse of their ID proof. So far, more than 1.17 crore 12-digit Aadhar numbers have been deactivated.

New service on My Aadhar Portal

Now if a person dies, UIDAI has taken a big step to prevent misuse of his Aadhar card. UIDAI has now deactivated the Aadhar numbers of dead people. An official statement has stated that more than 1.17 crore Aadhar numbers have been deactivated so far. All these belong to those who have died. Now UIDAI has started a new facility on ‘My Aadhar Portal’. It has the facility to inform about the death of a family member. Through this, any person can give information about a deceased member of his family.

How is identification done?

UIDAI has collected about 1.55 crore death records from 24 states and union territories. They have received this information through the Civil Registration System (CRS). After completing the verification process of this data, about 1.17 crore Aadhaar numbers have been closed. The process is going on even where there is no CRS yet. More than 6.7 lakh death records have been received from such states and union territories. The work of deactivating them is going on.

How to give information about a deceased family member?

If a member of someone’s family dies, then any other member can give information by going to ‘My Aadhaar Portal’. For this, he will have to authenticate himself (such as login with OTP), give the Aadhaar number of the deceased. Along with this, death certificate number and some other population related information will have to be given. After checking this information, UIDAI deactivates the Aadhaar number of the deceased.

Verification of people above 100 years of age

One special thing is that UIDAI is now also verifying those Aadhaar holders who are above 100 years of age. This work is being done under a pilot project. Their data is being shared with the respective state governments to find out whether they are still alive or not.
