UK ban all direct flights to and from UAE, world’s most busy airline route closed

Britain says it is adding UAE, Burundi and Rwanda to its Coronavirus travel ban list

The United Kingdom has been prohibiting direct passenger flights to and from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) since Friday. Doing so will close the world’s busiest international airline route from Dubai to London. The UK said it was adding the UAE, Burundi and Rwanda to its Coronavirus travel ban list. The reason behind this is the more lethal variant of Covid-19 found in South Africa.

UK Transport Minister Grant Shaps said on Twitter on Thursday that this means that those coming to the UK via these countries also have an entry ban. Although British, Irish and third country citizens are exempted from this, they will have to stay in home isolation for 10 days.

Emirates and Etihad Airways, meanwhile, said they would stop all UK passenger flights from 1300 GMT on their websites after the ban was announced on Friday. At the same time, Dubai Air Port said in a statement that all the passengers who had booked UK flights, have been advised not to come to the airport after the ban is implemented. They have also been asked to contact their respective airlines.

The UK Transport Department has advised UK citizens to use the Indirect Commercial Airline route currently in the United Arab Emirates if they wish to return to the UK.
