NPCI is going to change the rules related to UPI payment. The new rules will come into effect from August 1, 2025. Let us tell you what is the guideline regarding this and how will it affect you?

UPI Limit: National Payments Corporation of India is going to implement new API rules in UPI from August 1, 2025. These changes will limit many facilities of UPI users. NPCI has issued guidelines regarding the new service to banks and payment service providers like Paytm, PhonePe. This will affect services like balance check, autopay and transaction status check. Let us know what will change after August 1, 2025 and what users will not be able to do.

Balance information

Users will now be able to check balance only 50 times in a day from any one UPI app. If you use two apps, you can check 50 times in both separately. You will not be able to get balance information more than this.

Time restriction of autopay payments

Autopay mandates will no longer be possible during peak hours i.e. 10 am to 1 pm and 5 pm to 9:30 pm. These payments will be processed only during non-peak hours, which may cause delays in the autopay schedule.

Transaction status check

If a transaction fails due to certain error codes such as network issues, repeated API calls to check the status will stop. Users will not know immediately whether the payment was successful or not.

List account details

Users will be able to check the list of accounts linked to their mobile number only 25 times a day from an app. This request will work only when the user selects the bank and agrees.

NPCI has ordered banks and PSPs to monitor API usage. If the rules are not followed, API restrictions, penalties or ban on adding new customers can be imposed. All PSPs will have to give an undertaking of system audit by 31 August 2025. Due to these changes, users will have trouble repeatedly checking balance, autopay setup or status. NPCI says that these rules are being made to make the system easy and safe.
