Tourists from G20 countries can make payments in India using the UPI One World Prepaid Wallet. Download a UPI app, sign up with your international mobile number, and link your bank account.
To make UPI payments using your international mobile number in India, you need to download a UPI app that supports foreign numbers, such as Paytm, PhonePe, BHIM, Google Pay (Indian version) or your bank’s mobile app.
After installing the app, sign up with your international mobile number, verify via SMS, then link your NRE or NRO bank account and set a UPI PIN. Now you can easily make payments using UPI in India.
Know these important things before trying UPI
Must have an NRE or NRO bank account: You must have an NRE (Non-Resident External) or NRO (Non-Resident Ordinary) account with a bank in India.
Your international number must be linked to your bank records: Your international mobile number must be the same as the one updated in the bank’s KYC records. This number will be used for verification.
Your country must be one of the countries supported by NPCI: Currently, this feature is only available for mobile numbers from certain countries, such as the USA, UK, UAE, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, and France.
Both the app and the bank must support this feature: Make sure both your bank and the UPI app you’re using support international numbers (such as Paytm, PhonePe, BHIM, Google Pay, etc.).
Learn the step-by-step process
Download the UPI app: Download a UPI app that supports international mobile numbers, such as Paytm, PhonePe, or ICICI iMobile Pay, from your phone’s app store.
Log in with your international number: Open the app, select your country code, and enter your international mobile number.
Perform device verification: The app will send an SMS to your international number to verify your identity and device. Keep in mind that you must have international SMS or roaming balance, otherwise this step will not be completed.
Link your NRE/NRO bank account: After verification, select your bank name in the app. The app will automatically pull your bank account information (linked to the number).
Set a UPI PIN: Enter the last 6 digits and expiration date of your Indian debit card, and create a secure UPI PIN. This PIN will be used for every payment or transaction.
Start making payments: You can now make payments in Indian Rupees (INR) in India:
*Pay at stores by scanning a QR code
*Send money to a UPI ID or Indian mobile number
*Pay electricity, mobile recharge, or other bills
If you are not of Indian origin but are visiting India from G20 countries (such as the USA, UK, Japan, France, etc.), you can use the “UPI One World Prepaid Wallet.” This process involves:
- You will need to complete physical KYC (identity verification) at an authorized location (such as an airport or money exchange center).
- You can then load money into your wallet in INR (Indian Rupees) using your international card (Visa/MasterCard).
- You can then make payments by scanning the QR code in India using that wallet’s UPI app.
- An Indian bank account is not required for this feature.
