UPI Payments System Change: The method of making UPI payments by entering your UPI ID or mobile number is now being discontinued. This was scheduled to take effect on February 28, 2026. This is called UPI Collect. You will now have the option to make payments directly through the UPI app icon and QR code. This will make payments faster and more secure.
UPI Payments System Change: Now you will not be able to make UPI payments by entering UPI ID or mobile number. To make digital payments more secure and faster, NPCI has made a big change. Till now, while making online payments, one had to type UPI ID or mobile number manually, which was called ‘UPI Collect’. Now this method is being discontinued for most places.
According to reports, now instead of this option, you will get the option to directly click on the icon of the payment apps or scan the QR Code. This will not only make making payments easier but will also make online payments more secure. This change was to come into effect from 28 February 2026.
What is UPI Collect?
This was a method of online payment in which the buyer manually entered their UPI ID or mobile number (if the same was being used as the UPI ID). The app or website then sent a request to the payment app to deduct the money.
The user then entered their PIN in the payment app and made the payment. This method was called UPI Collect because the app or website accepting the payment sent a message to the payment app to receive the payment.
How will you be able to make payments now?
Now, this method is being made much easier. Starting February 28, 2026, most places will offer a UPI app icon or QR code for making payments. Clicking on the app icon to make a payment will open the app directly on your phone. Selecting the QR code will display a QR code, allowing you to scan it and make your payment.
The old method will continue in these locations.
It’s worth noting that UPI Collect will not be completely discontinued after February 28, 2026. It will continue to be used for certain specific situations and purposes, such as:
- For the stock market and IPOs: If you invest in the stock market or want to apply for a company’s IPO, you will need to enter your UPI ID or mobile number to make payments.
- Apple and iPhone users: If you make purchases through a mobile app or browser on an iPhone or iOS device, the same old system will still work.
- For managing old payments: If you’ve already set up an auto-payment, you’ll need to manually enter your UPI ID or mobile number to change or stop it.
- For international payments: If you’re making payments to an international website or a business outside your country, the old UPI Collect method will still work.
