UPI Transactions: Sending money using UPI is very fast and easy. But even a small mistake, like entering the wrong UPI ID or tapping the wrong name, can send the money to the wrong person. It’s natural to panic. The good news is that if you take timely and appropriate action, there’s a chance you’ll get your money back.

UPI transactions are instant, but each transaction has a Unique Transaction ID (UTR), which allows banks to track the money. The most important thing is to report any mistakes immediately.

Step 1: Check the transaction details carefully

Go to your UPI app and confirm the following:

  • Transaction ID (UTR)
  • Date and time
  • Amount sent
  • Receiver’s UPI ID or name
  • Also, make sure the transaction is indeed sent to the wrong person and is not pending or delayed.

Step 2: File a complaint in the UPI app

  • Most UPI apps have a complaint option.
  • Go to Transaction History
  • Select the wrong transaction
  • Choose an option like “Sent to wrong person” or “Wrong UPI ID.”
  • This registers your complaint and informs the bank.

Step 3: Contact your bank immediately.

Call your bank’s customer service or visit your nearest branch.

Provide them with the following information:

Transaction ID

*Amount

*Date and time

*Screenshot of the transaction

Your bank will contact the opposite bank and request a refund. Keep in mind, the bank cannot deduct money from the receiver’s account without their permission, but in many cases the receiver agrees.

Step 4: Try to contact the receiver yourself

Sometimes the UPI app displays the receiver’s name or partial number. If possible, politely request a refund. This method often results in a quick refund.

Step 5: Escalate your complaint if the issue remains unresolved.

If the issue remains unresolved, you can:

  • File a complaint with the bank’s grievance cell
  • File a complaint with the NPCI (UPI’s governing body)
  • If the bank doesn’t act promptly, file a complaint with the RBI Banking Ombudsman

How long does it take to get your money back?

There’s no set timeframe:

  • If the receiver cooperates: A few days
  • If the complaint progresses: 2 to 4 weeks or more
  • The sooner you file a complaint, the better your chances.

Key points to know

  • UPI transactions are not automatically reversed.
  • The bank can only request it, not forcibly take the money.
  • Refunds largely depend on the receiver’s consent.
  • Fraud or scam cases are handled through a different process.

How to avoid sending money to the wrong UPI ID?

  • Carefully check the receiver’s name displayed on the screen.
  • Test by sending ₹1 to a new UPI ID.
  • Avoid manual typing, use QR codes.
  • Check everything again before entering your UPI PIN.
