The US Department of Homeland Security has launched a self-deportation offer. Under this, undocumented immigrants will be allowed to voluntarily leave the country. The department has offered financial assistance of $2,600 and a free flight ticket to return to their countries.
The US department used a photo of the Taj Mahal in the advertisement and urged illegal Indian immigrants to return to their countries for free. In a post on X, DHS wrote, “You can go home with a fresh start! Self-deporting using CBP Home will earn you a free flight back home and a $2,600 exit bonus.”
US Department of Health Advice to Immigrants
The US Department of Health and Human Services (DHS) also advised immigrants to use the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) online application. This allows them to voluntarily submit their request to leave the US, share their details, and even receive financial assistance for the program.
DHS established ‘Project Homecoming’ in May last year. Under President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown, self-deportation has been described by US officials as the safest option for illegal immigrants. It allows them to voluntarily leave the country without facing legal action. Under this plan, officials will track departures, and immigrants will be required to upload information to verify their departure.
Bonuses and free flights for illegal immigrants to leave the US
A DHS press release announced, “The United States is generously offering $1,000 and a free flight to illegal immigrants to voluntarily leave the country.” This is part of the Trump administration’s $200 million Stay Out and Go Now campaign. Earlier in August 2025, U.S. Defense Secretary Kristi Noem announced that in her first 200 days as secretary, the number of illegal immigrants in the U.S. had decreased by nearly 1.6 million. According to the release, Noem said, “This is a tremendous achievement. This means safer roads, savings for taxpayers, less pressure on schools and hospital services, and better job opportunities for Americans. Thank you, President Trump!”
During these 200 days, DHS also launched an international, multimillion-dollar advertising campaign warning illegal immigrants to leave now, as failing to do so could result in arrest and deportation. The release further stated that President Trump and Secretary Noem have activated U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to conduct targeted operations to remove criminal illegal immigrants.
