Washington: The United States is currently facing a severe snowstorm, forcing millions of Americans to endure another night in the cold and without power. The northeastern region of the country received more snow on Monday, while parts of the south remained covered in snow. Meanwhile, at least 30 people have died due to the cold. More than a foot of snow has crippled traffic across a 2,100-kilometer stretch from Arkansas to New England, halting flights and leading to widespread school closures on Monday.

The National Weather Service reported that areas north of Pittsburgh received up to 20 inches of snow. By late Monday night, temperatures dropped to minus 31 degrees Celsius. According to the Associated Press, two-thirds of the United States is experiencing severe cold. The weather service said on Monday that a new influx of Arctic air will continue the freezing cold in areas already covered in snow.

Another Snowstorm Possibility

Meteorologists have predicted another snowstorm could hit parts of the East Coast this weekend. Meanwhile, the number of deaths from the cold continues to rise across the country. In New York, officials reported that eight people were found dead in the open during the bitterly cold weekend. New York City experienced its heaviest snowfall in years, with some areas receiving 8 to 15 inches of snow.

Power outages in millions of homes

According to reports, millions of people are without electricity due to the blizzard. More than 630,000 homes across the country were without power on Monday evening, most of them in the South. The icy rain has broken tree branches and power lines. More than 12,000 flights across the US were delayed or canceled on Monday. According to aviation tracking firm Cirium, 45% of US flights were canceled on Sunday, the highest since the COVID-19 pandemic.
