For the first time, the train uses bolsterless coaches, which will prevent a cup of tea from falling off the table even at speeds of 160 km/h. Airplane-style bio-vacuum toilets and touch-free faucets have been provided.
Vande Bharat Sleeper Train: The country’s second Vande Bharat Sleeper will be on the tracks in March. Its route has not yet been finalized, but experts say it could run on one of the following routes: Delhi-Howrah, Delhi-Mumbai, or Chennai-Bengaluru-Mumbai.
A senior Railway Board official stated that the target is to operate a total of 12 Vande Bharat Sleeper trains by 2026. Each train will be technologically advanced and feature enhanced compared to its predecessor. The Vande Bharat Sleeper has been designed by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) to provide passengers with an airplane-like or five-star hotel-like experience. The train’s aisles are equipped with smart sensor lights that only illuminate when a passenger moves.
Use of Bolsterless Coaches
For the first time, the train uses bolsterless bogies (coaches), which will prevent a teacup from falling off the table even at speeds of 160 km/h. Based on airplane design, it is equipped with bio-vacuum toilets and touch-free taps. The newly designed, advanced Vande Bharat Sleeper train will feature smart sensor lights, vacuum toilets, bolsterless coaches, and branded catering.
VIP quotas also available on Vande Bharat Sleeper
The Railway Board recently made a significant change to the rules for the Amrit Bharat and Vande Bharat Sleeper trains. A new order issued on February 9th reinstated the emergency quota (VIP quota) on these premium trains. A senior Railway Board official explained that initially (as per the January 2026 rules), these trains only had quotas for ladies, senior citizens, and the disabled to ensure a transparent ticketing system. However, due to high passenger demand and urgent needs (such as medical emergencies or government duties), the quota has now been extended.
He explained that the number of berths has been fixed for different trains and classes. In the Amrit Bharat Express, this quota applies to trains with seven or more sleeper coaches. In these, 24 berths per train in the sleeper class have been reserved for the emergency quota. In the Vande Bharat Sleeper, berth allocation is based on the class of the coach. The quota is based on weekdays and weekends. In the Vande Bharat Sleeper, 4 to 6 berths will be reserved in AC-1, 20 to 30 berths in AC-2, and 24 to 42 berths in AC-3.
These seats remain vacant until the chart is prepared. If no emergency requests are received, these seats are allocated to general passengers on the waiting list. Berths under this quota are given in case of medical emergency (serious illness or travel to hospital), family reasons (death of a family member or any other unforeseen event), government duty (MPs, ministers, High Court-Supreme Court judges and government officials on duty) and other job interviews or very important official work.
