Vande Bharat sleeper trains: Indian Railways has taken a major step for long-distance travelers. Preparations are now complete to operate 260 Vande Bharat Sleeper trains across the country. These trains are being designed specifically for overnight travel, saving passengers time and ensuring a comfortable journey. BEML and Chennai’s Integral Coach Factory (ICF) are jointly developing these trains. By the end of 2026, 12 such trains will be operational.
What are the fare and ticket booking rules?
The Railways has significantly revised the existing rules for these new trains. Facilities have been improved keeping the common man in mind, but the booking process will be slightly different. According to the Railway Board, fares will be determined based on the distance.
No waiting, no RAC: Waiting or RAC tickets will not be available on these trains. Passengers will only be provided with confirmed seats.
Digital booking: Tickets can only be booked online or digitally.
Fare: A minimum travel charge of 400 kilometers will apply. The 3AC fare for a 400-kilometer journey will be approximately ₹960.
Relief for the elderly: The system will prioritize lower berths for men over 60 and women over 45.
How much speed and amenities are there?
Vande Bharat Sleeper trains will surpass Rajdhani trains not only in appearance but also in speed and safety. Modern technology has been used for passenger safety.
This train can travel at a speed of 160 kilometers per hour, significantly reducing travel time. For safety, it features the ‘KAVACH’ system and special fire barrier doors for fire prevention. UV-C lamps have been used to keep the air inside the coach clean, eliminating germs. Special toilets have been provided for the disabled and comfortable stairs have been built to access the upper berths.
