Vande Bharat sleeper train: A video of a trial run of the Vande Bharat sleeper train is surprising people. The video shows the train traveling at a speed of 180 km per hour.
New Delhi: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav on Tuesday shared some great news about the Vande Bharat Sleeper train. He shared a video of the train’s speed trial on the Express. The video shows the new train running at 180 kmph, its maximum design speed. This trial took place on the Kota-Nagda section.
Notably, despite such high speeds, the glasses of water on the train remained undisturbed, and not a single drop of water was spilled. This is a testament to the train’s superior technology. Ashwini Vaishnav wrote on the Express, “The Vande Bharat Sleeper was tested today by the Commissioner of Railway Safety. It ran at a speed of 180 kmph between the Kota-Nagda section. And our own water test demonstrated the technical capabilities of this new-generation train.”
Train to Launch Soon
The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train will soon be launched for long-distance overnight journeys. This train is a sleeper version of the Vande Bharat Chair Car train currently operating on Indian Railways. Two prototypes of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train have been built by BEML and are currently in the testing phase.

Railways Preparing for Change
Indian Railways is preparing to bring about a major transformation in long-distance rail travel. Over 200 Vande Bharat sleeper trains are planned in the next few years. Several manufacturing programs are underway to accomplish this massive task.
BEML, in collaboration with the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), is manufacturing 10 sleeper train sets. Another 10 sets are being manufactured by Kinet, a joint venture between Indian and Russian companies. Additionally, a consortium of Titagarh Rail Systems and BHEL has been awarded a contract to manufacture 80 sleeper variants. ICF is also separately developing a sleeper version of the Vande Bharat train.
Features of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train
The first two prototypes of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train will have 16 coaches, including 11 AC three-tier coaches, 4 AC two-tier coaches, and 1 AC first-class coach. The train is designed as a semi-high-speed service and can run at speeds of up to 160 km/h. However, testing has been conducted at 180 km/h. However, the actual speed will depend on the capacity of Indian Railways’ tracks.
Inspired by the design of European rolling stock, the sleeper coaches will have comfortable cushioned berths. Climbing into the upper berths will also be easy. For passenger convenience, the train will feature low-light night lighting, audio announcements with visual display systems, CCTV cameras, and a modular pantry.
Hot water will also be available.
The train will be equipped with advanced bio-vacuum toilets, similar to those in airplanes. Significantly, it will also feature accessible toilets for the disabled, baby care units, and shower cubicles with hot water in the AC first-class coaches. For safety, the train will be equipped with indigenous Kavach anti-collision technology. Like the chair car version, the sleeper version will also feature a regenerative braking system, which will save energy.
