Private vehicles: In Rampur, ‘G’ series numbers were distributed to private vehicles like freebies. The Transport Department has become strict on the allocation of government numbers to private vehicles. Now ‘G’ series numbers will be removed from all private vehicles.

Even in the auction of government vehicles, buyers will not be able to use ‘G’ series numbers, rather they will be compulsorily given a new number after the auction. The owners of vehicles which have been allotted ‘G’ series numbers have been given 60 days to change them.

The Uttar Pradesh Transport Department has said that all registration series with ‘G’ number series are reserved only for government vehicles. After the auction or transfer of any government vehicle, as soon as the vehicle comes into private ownership, the ‘G’ mark will automatically become invalid and a new registration number of private category will be compulsorily issued.

This arrangement is in accordance with sections 41(6), 53 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, Rule 50/55/57 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 and Rule 51/51-A of the Uttar Pradesh Motor Vehicles Rules, 1998.

All such vehicles which have come into private ownership after auction/transfer from any department/institution and on which ‘G’ is still marked, they should go to their Regional Transport Office (ARTO) and get a new private registration number, they will have to get a new registration certificate and get a new high security number plate installed.

This process has to be completed within 60 days. For the convenience of the people, as far as possible, an attempt will be made to give the last four digits in the new number. In this work, only the cost of re-printing of RC and HSRP will have to be paid.

If the process is not completed within the time limit, other actions including suspension of RC will be taken. This will not affect the vehicle’s insurance and tax etc.

Transport Commissioner Brajesh Narayan Singh has said that private use of government ‘G’ identity is prohibited. All affected vehicle owners must get their new private registration number and HSRP within the stipulated 60 days. The process is simple, transparent. Legal action will be taken in case of delay.

Why is it necessary

  • ‘G’ is limited to government ownership only; its presence in private ownership is against the rules.
  • It is a government identification, on private vehicles it increases the risk of confusion/misuse at toll/entry control.
  • The registration certificate and HSRP and number data ensure the accuracy of the challan and toll system.
