The Trump administration in the US has changed the rules regarding migrant workers overnight. This will directly impact migrant workers living and working in the US.

The US Department of Homeland Security issued an order. Under this order, such migrants will no longer receive automatic work authorization. This means that there will be no automatic extension of foreign workers’ employment cards.

This will cause the most problems for spouses holding H-1B visas, students working after completing their studies in the US, and asylum seekers. Under the new rule, security checks will be conducted before each new card is issued.

Will Indians be most affected?

It is being said that this will affect Indians the most, as 71 percent of H-1B visa holders are Indians. India also accounts for the largest number of foreign students in the US.

Most people coming on H-4 visas are spouses of H-1B employees. They provide financial support to the family. Now, their jobs are also in danger. People have been advised to submit a new application 180 days before the card expires. The longer they delay, the more work will be disrupted.

In the past, if a new application was submitted on time, the card would continue to be valid even after the old one expired, but now this facility has been discontinued.

Regarding this, the US government says that working in the US is not a right but a privilege. This change will affect Indian workers the most, as Indians constitute the largest share of H-1B visa holders and international students.
