WhatsApp will now stop working as soon as the SIM card is removed from the phone, this is the new rule

The instant messaging app WhatsApp has implemented a SIM binding policy. Removing the SIM card from your phone will prevent WhatsApp from working. The government has implemented these rules to protect the safety of Indians and curb cybercriminals.

The WhatsApp platform has incorporated SIM binding service, and testing for it has begun in the latest beta update. This information was shared by Wabetainfo. In order to prevent cyber fraud, the Indian government’s Department of Communications announced SIM-binding rules for most OTT apps.

Wabetainfo posted that the messaging app has started working with the new regulation, called SIM binding. This will ensure WhatsApp accounts remain secure and work only on active SIM cards. WhatsApp’s beta Android 2.26.8.6 update reveals that it is working on India’s mandatory SIM linking rules.

What is the SIM binding rule?

SIM-Binding is a service that allows any messaging or communication app to only work with the SIM card associated with the number it’s registered to. WhatsApp will also stop working if the SIM is removed or replaced from a smartphone. SIM binding is already supported in UPI apps.

Wabetainfo has released screenshots, which can be seen in the post. The instant messaging app will implement technical measures to comply with the new regulations in India.

Current System on WhatsApp

Currently, users can use WhatsApp by periodically entering a 6-digit verification code. Once logged in, the system does not check whether the SIM is active. This will not happen with SIM binding.

The Indian government’s objective

According to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), the SIM binding system is intended to prevent misuse of disconnected or resold phone numbers. It will also help curb cyber scammers.
