Microsoft is now going to shut down a Windows 11 version forever. According to a report, Microsoft’s experiment with a “school-friendly” version of Windows 11 is officially coming to an end. This version is named Windows 11 SE, which was specially designed for classes and low-cost laptops. It is being discontinued just a few years after its launch. Launched in 2021, Windows 11 SE was introduced as a competitor to Google’s Chrome OS. Will your PC running on Windows 11 SE stop working, let’s know everything in detail…

Support will stop in October 2026

Microsoft has now confirmed that this version is going to be discontinued. It will stop receiving support including security updates, technical assistance and feature fixes in October 2026. Microsoft said that the last major update of Windows 11 SE has arrived. The 24H2 version is its last feature release, when the 25H2 update comes later this year, SE users will be stuck with what they have got.

Switch to a device running on a newer version

In a note published on Microsoft Learn, the company said, “Microsoft will not roll out any feature updates after Windows 11 SE, version 24H2. It will stop receiving all support, including software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes, in October 2026. Although your device will continue to work, we recommend switching to a device that supports another version of Windows 11 to ensure continued support and security.”

When Windows 11 SE launched, Microsoft described it as “a cloud-first operating system that offers the power and reliability of Windows 11 with a simple design and tools designed specifically for schools.” It came pre-installed on some laptops, starting with the Surface Laptop SE, but never became widely available.

For schools and users still running Windows 11 SE, the advice is to enjoy it while it lasts. After October 2026, those laptops will continue to run but will not receive security updates or new features. If your device supports Windows 11, Microsoft recommends you migrate to the full version.

Microsoft still offers Windows 11 Education, a version specifically designed for academic environments that doesn’t have the app restrictions and simplified multitasking that frustrated SE users. Another problem is that the education version is priced higher.

This isn’t Microsoft’s first attempt to take on Chrome OS. The company’s most success came from Windows 10X, which was a very toned-down version of Windows that worked great even on cheaper devices. But 10X was discontinued before launch, giving way to Windows 11 SE. Unfortunately, it could never match the smooth and light experience of Chromebooks.
